This week’s Bitter Friday playlist is overloaded with Carly Rae Jepsen, because of course it is. Emotion is fantastic, and I’m sorry if I cause you any distress by getting “Boy Problems” stuck in your head.

Unusually for such a record, even a great one, Emotion has already inspired some excellent writing:

Halsey’s BADLANDS comes out today, which is all I’ve heard anyone talk about this week. It’s pretty rad. The deluxe version has a haunting cover of “Walk the Line”, of all things.

Foals’ What Went Down also comes out today, which I haven’t heard anyone talk about but who cares, Foals are awesome.

There’s a Flight of the Conchords film being planned, in case you’re suffering from a deficiency of goofy songs.

Angel Haze dropped “Babe Ruthless” this week, which in addition to having a great title is also featured on her upcoming mixtape Back to the Woods.

50 Cent’s video for “9 Shots” is a nod to the near-fatal shooting he suffered at the beginning of his career.

It’s being released in anticipation of Street King Immortal, which is being billed as a comeback record. (I don’t know what was wrong with Animal Ambition that counted as 50 dropping off—or maybe Street King Immortal is a comeback from bankruptcy record?)

BONUS PLAYLIST: Nashville phenomenon Dustin Ransom released an EP this week called Thread On Fire that channels some good old-timey soul. He’s made a companion playlist of the songs that inspired the EP. (It’s neither here nor there, but the first time I heard this guy play was at a Christmas party—when I walked in, he was in the middle of playing Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” on drums…and singing it at the same time. Better than anyone I’ve heard do either.)
